Joanna Burrows, the local fund raiser for Epilepsy Action was presented with a cheque for £1,500 by the Club President John Turner following a very successful “Big Bike Ride” held in September. A staggering 230 cyclists took part covering one of three routes offered. The courses were around South Leicester-shire covering 11 – 23 and 39 miles starting and finishing at Misterton Hall in perfect cycling weather.
Joanna Burrows from Epilepsy Action told the club that its aim was to improve the lives of those who suffered from up to 40 different types of epilepsy and there were up to 600,000 sufferers in the UK and some 3,000 in Leicestershire overall in the UK this represents one in 123 of the population in the UK The Charity specialised in helping people and their families cope with the problem and run a telephone help line which take and make 1.4 million calls each year costing them an average of £6 a call.
Epilepsy Action promote their cause amongst a legion of registered charities currently in the UK Neil Green a keen cyclist and owner of Neil Green Catering based in Lutterworth told us at the presentation he had just raised £3,000 from a sponsored bike ride in Tanzania and along with Joanna Burrows thanked the club for raising such a magnificent sum for them.
